To Praise Her In The Gates

Magic Kingdom, Orlando, Dec 30, 2011
The wisdom writer points out that the works of a good woman literally speak praises of her among those in the community where she lives (Proverbs 31:31). Well, I’d like to take a little liberty and add my voice to the chorus being proclaimed by the many good works of my wife, Susan. (And for those who know her, you know she would not be happy with this post!)
The thought for this struck me as I began reading Genesis this year. As I made my way through chapter two, I read:
Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (Gen. 2:18, ESV)
Every man who has a good woman, and every man who doesn’t, knows the monumental truth of this statement. It is decidedly not good that I should be alone. And I am desperate for a helper fit for me.
Keep reading for what God did next when he observed this reality in his creation:
Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field.
But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. (Gen. 2:19-25, ESV)
Isn’t that remarkable?! I mean really, what God has done here is so fundamentally awesome that if we are not careful we miss it here in the text, and in our experience.
God sees that Adam is alone and incomplete. He sees that all the other creatures in creation are not fit to complete him, to be a helper to him. And so he creates woman. And Adam’s response is a fitting one, birthing an entire music industry dedicated to romance and the declaration of love: Adam sings a song about the woman God has created!
And finally, given that such a fit is right and true, all men after Adam rightly leave their fathers and mothers and hold fast to the wife God created just for them.
What this passage reminded me is that I am no different in Adam in this respect: God has gloriously seen that it was not good for me to be alone. He knew from the beginning of time that I needed a helper to live this life to its greatest potential of glorifying and enjoying him.
And so he made a woman, and he named her Susan, and he gave her great beauty and patience, kindness and graciousness, wisdom and skill, endurance and steadfastness, faithfulness and goodness, godliness and holiness, joy and love. And he brought her into my life, and made clear to me that she would be mine, and only mine. My helper. My friend. My lover. My confidant. My rock. One who, over and over again, would point me to our common Creator and Father.
And as a new year begins, more than any other year previously, I want to hold fast to her. I want to love her, cherish her, serve her, and honor her. I want to help her grow into all that God desires her to be. I want to bless God for her, and to be one with her.
I write all this here to praise GOD for Susan Ann Molesky.
And I write this here to provoke all you husbands out there to take a moment, be stunned and amazed that God gave you the wife that he did - you!! - and praise her in the gates as well.
